Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI)


If there's one thing that's critical in a high performance engine, then it's fuel control. Think about it: the whole objective of adding a turbocharger, of installing NOS, even of installing a free flow exhaust system, is to improve fuel delivery into the combustion chamber. It is also events in the combustion chamber that can and will destroy a high performance race engine if it's not controlled properly. Here we're talking about controlling the combustion process. Now I've heard many arguments as to why sidedraft carburetors provide better performance than fuel injection and engine management, and vice versa but I always say: it's not about performance, it's about reliability and there's no better system for fuel control than electronic fuel injection. Any endurance race car from INDY Car Racing, to Formula 1, to the World Rally Championship, to the Le Mans Series uses electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems, not just for reliability but because ensuring that the correct amount of fuel is delivered under every condition, will provide the best performance.

FI is central to engine management. It relies on an engine control unit (ECU) which processes a number of inputs from various sensors on the engine to deliver the correct amount of fuel at a particular RPM and air-flow rate/air density combination. The fuel is delivered through an injector, which is an electronically actuated solenoid valve. The amount of fuel that is delivered is dependent on the fuel pressure, which is usually a constant 30 psi above intake manifold pressure, and the pulse duration of the injector, i.e., the length of time the injector is held open.

ost EFI systems have a standard set of sensors. These include:

The Barometric Pressure (BARO) Sensor, which provides the ECU with the atmospheric air pressure reading.
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor, which provides the ECU with the engine's current operating temperature. This is important because fuel vaporization varies for different engine temperatures. A cold engine requires more fuel while a hot engine requires less.
The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor, which the ECU needs to take into account when determining pulse duration.
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor, which is a tube positioned after the air filter in the air intake duct. The MAF sensor has a fine platinum wire that spans across the tube. The wire is heated by electrical current to maintain a constant temperature above ambient. The air flow past the wire cools the wire and more current is required to maintain the constant temperature. Thus, the amount of current required to maintain the constant temperature indicates the air flow rate. The air flow rate is divided by RPM to determine the pulse duration.
The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor, which uses manifold vacuum to measure engine load. An EFI system that uses a MAP sensor does not require a MAF sensor as it can use the input from the MAP sensor to determine the required pulse duration.
The Oxygen Sensor (O2S), which is used to measure the amount of oxygen that is not consumed during combustion. This is important for the correct operation of the catalyst converter and is used for emissions control rather than performance or economy. The O2S is located in the exhaust system and is an after-the-fact measure of the air/fuel ratio. Too much unburnt fuel in the exhaust indicates a lean mixture while too little oxygen indicates a rich mixture.
The Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor, which is important for timing purposes as it tells the ECU which spark plug to fire and which injector to open at any given point in the Otto cycle.
The Throttle Position (TP) Sensor, which is another important sensor as the throttle position and the rate of change in the throttle position indicates the what the diver wants the car to do.

Internal engine tuning modifications

Specialists can increase EITHER the peak torque/bhp output of the engine which gives a nice headline figure or spread the peak Torque/bhp band which gives a much improved drive. We would say to ignore the peak power figure and look at getting a nice wide and flat Torque band accross the rev range.

You can also have EITHER improved and a slightly lower power figure or tune the engine to the max and get reduced fuel consumption. Sadly you can't have everything you have to decide what the optimum rev range that you use is then specific gains can be generated in that area by flowing the head.

I had my 2.0 T series head flowed for Torque gains across a wider spread of the rev band, where peak torque now comes in almost from 1000 revs. I have also got much better fuel consumption - up by a stonking 10mpg (Other work has been done on the Head which also contributed to this gain)!!!

I do not seem to have more power in the higher rev bands so the headline power figure was not great up near the redline but I never really go that high so my engine is perfect for my driving style. The angle of the inlet valves, enlarging the inlet and exhaust valves and increasing the lift on the valve can all aid the way gases flow into and around the head.
Re bore

The cylinders to create a higher capacity engine – check that your engine management system is able to cope or can be adjusted to suit this will also require work on the pistons as they will need to be switched for wider ones. A stroker kit also increases the cylinder capacity and typically comprises conrods, crank and pistons and generates more space in the cylinders for air and fuel. More on engine rebores
Crank grind/polish

While the crank is ground it is worth balancing all of the other internals of the engine - your redline will be higher if the engine is balanced and a lighter polished crank gives less friction and releases more power from the engine.
Sport computer tuning

Changes the timing characteristics of the engine and is usually perfectly matched to your engine, fuel choice, driving style and car condition rather than the standard makers best guess setup which can cope with pretty bad servicing and poor quality fuel. Massive power gains and better fuel economy are available as is a high revs sport power setting and a low revs economy setting.

The downside is that you have to keep the engine in peak condition changing the plugs regularly and fastidiously following the service intervals. The cars which benefit the most from a sport computer are those which are fitted with a turbo or supercharger.

You can buy a standard plug in chip but it is much better to have the sport ECU set up specifically for your engine and have a custom map - again this can be set up to give better fuel economy, a lower peak torque cure, better acceleration or higher top end power. Some ECU's are impossible to reprogram without the manufacturers diagnostic equipment - the Rover MEMS is a point in case.

If this is the case with your engines computer you can add a piggyback device which gives false readings to your cars ECU and takes over control of Fuel, Ignition and boost control. More on ECU tuning
Port Matching

Port matching adjusts the diameter of the exhaust and inlet ports to match the profile on the manifolds which are nearly always bigger. (Don't take out the V groove as the torque will drastically reduce! The aim is to allow a smoother flow of air without the turbulence associated with having a step between the mating surfaces. Camshafts

A sport or fast road camshafts increase the duration of the valves opening and closing the engine is best suited to higher revs and can cause a stodgy tick over. Forced air induction.

A turbo or supercharger forces air into the engine at a greater pressure and more air and more fuel = bigger bang = more power. Turbo chargers use the force of the expelled exhaust to drive a turbine and ram fresh air into the engine. Superchargers however are driven by the engines drivetrain.
Turbos vs superchargers

Superchargers give an increase at all revs the higher the revs the more induction charge there is and turbochargers have the same effect although lower down there is what is known as turbo lag – where the effect of the turbo cuts in at a higher rev range.

Turbo chargers produce more power than supercharges but most modern engine would need an engine management computer upgrade to be able to handle the altered air flow – the fuel injectors would need to run at a higher pressure to get the fuel into the now pressurised combustion chamber. Fuelling

When you increase the power of an engine you will need to increase the amount of fuel it has to work with. You will usually need to uprate the injectors and fuel pump. The mix ratio of air to fuel needs to be closely balanced and most engine tuning projects will involved increasing the amount of fuel and air combusted in the engine

The idea here is to keep adding paint until the desired chrome finish is achieved. You can't remove paint once applied so you have to take your time.

It is this stage that takes a great amount of skill and you need a real feel for what you are doing. If the baking is not done right you will not get a very good chrome finish at all. It is for this reason that chrome paint is out of reach for the DIY spray painter. (At least for the moment.)

Step 5. This is the application of a protective clear coat. If you want a gold or indeed any other finish you can add some paint to tint this clear coat and the chrome reflectiveness will remain but carry the tint of the clear coat.

How to Apply MirraChrome



MirraChrome will create a mirror finish as long as your surface
is as smooth as glass. Please follow these steps for best results:

Step 1. - Begin by covering your surface with a black basecoat.

Step 2. - Lay down a clear coat, preferably our Alsa Speed
Clear, which is very low in solvents (Remember to use 4 parts
Alsa Speed Clear to 1 part Alsa Speed Hardener). In order for
the finished product to achieve a true chrome look we
recommend you wait 7-10 days to allow the clear to fully
cure before wetsanding and buffing. Make sure to use a soft
lint-free rag. If your surface already has a glass l ike sheen,
move on to step 3.

Step 3. - Thoroughly clean the surface with an alcohol or
alcohol/water solution and dry, taking care to insure it is
streak free.

Step 4. - Begin applying MirraChrome using a dusting effect,
(very small volume of material with a substantial amount of
air). If you are using an H.V.L.P. gun you should be around
20 p.s.i. otherwise use whatever the recommended air
pressure is for your gun, remembering to keep the material
volume very low. Continue applying the MirraChrome until
desired effect is achieved. Wait as long as possible, at
least 24-48 hours, to allow tail solvents to fully evaporate.

Step 5. - (Optional) Some customers have stated that
heating the surface with a heat gun or hair dryer will
actually improve the appearance even more as well as help
to speed the outgasing of tail solvents.

Step 6. - Use a very soft lint-free cloth to remove any of
the excess dust/overspray from the surface. If you complete
this step you will notice a drastic improvement in the
final appearance.

Step 7. - Top with your final poly-urethane clear coat.
You can add Candy Concentrate tints to your top clear coat
to achieve any color chrome you desire.

Step 8. - Let cure then sand and buff as needed.
